Are you or someone you know struggling financially due to the burden of taking care of a family member? Are you overwhelmed by the cost of medical care for a loved one? Are you losing hours at work due to the stress of being a caregiver? Don’t face these challenges alone. There are valuable solutions out there that can help ease the burden of caring for a loved one, and help prevent caregiver burnout. You can get PAID to care for your family member or loved one!

As a Home Care Nurse, I teach many families on the services available that can ease the financial burden of taking care of an elderly grandparent or a handicapped loved one.

Here are a few steps you can take to get paid for your service:

  1. Review your insurance coverage options: Private long term care insurance policies can cover the cost of personal care services. Each insurance company is different, and the extent of coverage needs to be evaluated. Medicaid offers multiple Wiaver Programs that can cover the cost of home care services for those who qualify. Medicaid coverage is income based, and qualification is based on guidelines set by Medicaid. If you have an ACCESS card, you qualify for Medicaid insurance.

  2. Contact your County’s Area Office of Aging, and request an assessment to determine if you qualify to have personal care services paid for by Medicaid. In Philadelphia, you have to contact PCA (Philadelphia Corporation of the Aging), in Delaware County you have to contact COSA, but each county has a different contact office. Our friendly staff at Greater Homecare Services can provide information on who to contact in your county.
  3. Await the outcome of your assessment: Your County’s Office of Aging (PCA in Philadelphia) will notify you if your loved one qualifies for personal care services, and how many hours of care they have been approved for.
  4. Choose a home care agency: Your family member can choose any home care agency they trust to provide a trained and certified caregiver, or they could choose to have any family member as their caregiver.
  5. Get PAID: Your home care agency of choice will pay you for the hours of care you were approved to provide.

There are a lot of steps in the process of getting paid to care for a family member or loved one, and I have tried my best to simplify the process. You are already giving your loved one the best care you can provide, and getting paid for your work could go a long way in relieving stress or financial burdens.
